What Is Cultural Landscape?

Have you ever been asked or heard the question, what is cultural landscape? If you are interested in landscaping, you have probably heard the phrase "cultural landscape" more than once. But when it comes to this type of landscaping, there are a lot of people that do not even know what it means. Sure, you can probably come up with an idea of what this sort of landscaping entails, but do you know the details that go along with it?

Cultural landscaping is a way for somebody to express their background in the form of their landscape. The great thing about this sort of landscaping is that it comes in a variety of different forms. The reason for this is simple; there are hundreds of different and unique cultures that have been around for thousands of years. This means that anybody who is interested in their culture can convey it through the type of landscaping that they use.

Up to this point in time, there are 37 properties that have been classified as cultural landscapes on the World Heritage List. Even though these are the only properties that have been officially recognized, this does not mean that you cannot take some of these ideas and incorporate them into your current landscape.

One of the most popular of these cultural landscapes can be found in Australia at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The number one feature of this park is the rock formations that set it apart. Even though you will never be able to incorporate this amount of rock into your landscape, you will be able to take some cues. By studying these formations, you can learn how to landscape your yard to make it appear more natural.

Another great place to study if you are in search of landscaping tips is the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in India. Again, just like in Australia you will be able to study the rock shelters that are used. Of course you will never be able to use these when landscaping your yard because they are too big and impractical; but that does not mean that you cannot learn from them. By simply studying the purpose and structure you will be able to come up with many ideas that you can use when landscaping your own yard.

Overall, by visiting or studying these cultural landscapes you will be able to get some great ideas that you can use on your own yard. Many people overlook these cultural landscapes because they are on a large scale, and think that they cannot be cut down to size; nothing can be further from the truth. By studying these landscapes you will be able to transform your yard to reflect any culture.
